at o'connor park, tullamore, county offaly in the midlands of ireland, for this all ireland preliminary quarter final clash between the Lilly whites from kildare, vs the farney army from monaghan.

gaelic football. the biggest sport in ireland, with 2000 clubs, and almost every village having its own team.

the winner will advance to the quarter finals, whilst the season ends here for today's unlucky loser.

this is division 2 vs division 1 in the alliance league standings, the league campaign that proceeds the all ireland championships. 32 counties in ireland.

the teams who end up in divisions 1 and 2 of the winter competition, the alliance league will contest the all ireland championship, whilst the 3rd and 4th division teams contest a lesser competition.

monaghan, whose main county town is clones, close to the border, home to barry mcguiggan.

gaa football not being dissimilar to aussie rules, with players able to kick and throw the ball, but players can only play for the county of their birth, unless they can prove residency in another irish ccounty for 3 years. the all ireland final in terms of its popularity is not dissimilar to the prominence of the fa cup in england in the 1980s, in that the whole of the country is glued to the final in croak park at the end of July. result from o'connor park, and heart break for the lilly whites from kildare who went down to a one point defeat to monaghan, the farnie army winning with virtually the last kick of the game. their keeper made 2 cracking first half saves, and kildare hit the cross bar too. they were leading by 3 points mid way through the 2nd half, before 4 points from monaghan. kildare hit back with 2 more points to level the contest, but with extra time beckoning, monaghan stole the show.
