Sunday 25th June 2023.

on the atlantic coast, at salt hill, for all ireland preliminary gaa quarter final  football action. where bitter rivals the tribesmen from galway and mayo do battle. as with yester"day's action, this is do or die for the loser. these foes are bitter rivals and neighbouring counties. galway last won the all ireland champ in 2001, whilst mayo's last one was in 1951. mayo are the archetypal bridesmaids, being losing finalists an incredible 11 times since, and are rumoured to have a gypsey's curse over them, and these stats would seem to back this up. a 26000 sell out here.

galway hoping that some of their hurling counter parts success will rub off on them, as they were victorious over limerick yesterday. yesterday's full time result from pearse stadium, and mayo's dream of an all ireland crown, the sam maguire cup   is still alive, at least for now, with a 1 goal and 11 points to 12 win over galway. in  a game where the Atlantic breeze was critical, galway with the wind in their favour took at an 8 points to 3 half time lead, but missed 2 crucial frees which turned out to be costly. mayo came roaring out of the traps in the 2nd half with 7 unanswered points to lead by 2 including a crucial goal. both teams traded points during the latter stages, and galway scored a late one, but mayo had enough in the tank to hold on. they now face arguably the team they'd least like to face, as have been drawn to play dublin next weekend in the quarter finals at croak park in dublin.

whilst the season is over for last year's all ireland finalists galway.
